PRESS RELEASE
Fighting in Abyei

The Chairman of the Assessment and Evaluation Commission (AEC), Sir Derek Plumbly, today expressed grave concern at the recent fighting in Abyei, which has led to serious loss of life and the displacement of many of the residents. He said that he was in close touch with the United Nations mission about developments and had spoken to the parties to urge restraint. It was imperative that the fighting be brought to a complete halt and that the parties allow freedom of movement to the United Nations. The latest outbreak, the most serous in the area since the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, underlined the urgent need for the parties to reach agreement and to implement the Abyei Protocol in full.
