PRESS RELEASE
AEC Meeting with H.E. Salva Kiir in Juba

The Assessment and Evaluation Commission met in Juba and was received by the President of the Government of the Government of Southern Sudan.

The Assessment and Evaluation Commission (AEC), established under the Comprehensive Peace Agreement to monitor its implementation, held its monthly plenary meeting on 3 July, in Juba – the first time it has held such a meeting in Southern Sudan (the AEC’s headquarters are in Khartoum but its Chairman and the Commission Working Groups have been frequent visitors to Juba). The meeting was held at the Commission’s new office in the city. Both parties, the SPLM and the NCP, participated, as did the Ambassadors of Ethiopia, Kenya, France, Italy, the Netherlands, and the UK, the Charge d’Affaires of the US and representatives of the African Union, Arab League, the European Union, the United Nations and Norway.

The plenary meeting was a particularly important one, coming on the eve of the mid point in the six year interim period for CPA implementation, which falls on 9 July. The Commission discussed the current situation, including with regard to implementation of the Abyei Road Map and progress towards the holding of elections and the mid term evaluation report the AEC is due to submit by 9 July under the terms of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.

Before the plenary meeting Commission members met H.E. Salva Kiir, First Vice President and President of the Government of Southern Sudan and the Vice President, H.E. Riek Machar and members of the GoSS. The meeting reviewed the ideas in the mid term evaluation. The AEC Chairman, Sir Derek Plumbly, took the opportunity to thank President Salva Kiir for the SPLM’s active participation in, and cooperation with, the Commission.
